Together against plastic pollution

Belgrade, June 5, 2025 - The slogan of this year’s Worl Environment Day is #BeatPlasticPollution

Every June 5th, millions of people all over the world rally with the goal of protecting our joint home – the Earth. This is not just an opportunity to become aware of how important nature is, but also a call to action. Statistical data show that every minute over one million of plastic bottles end in dumps and in nature, while microplastics permeate the food we eat and the water we drink.

Microplastic consists of tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size, and that’s why they represent one of the largest problems for our health and the environment. Microplastics absorb poisonous chemicals, are hard to degrade, and can represent a long-term threat to biodiversity and the health of living beings.

The United Nations has launched many initiatives to reduce the use of plastic. One of them is a global campaign, "Clean Seas" launched in 2017, which aims to mobilise governments, companies, and individuals to reduce the use of plastic and prevent sea and ocean pollution. That is why it is of key importance not only to reduce the creation of this type of waste but also to prevent and control pollution by microplastics through responsible production, consumption, and proper recycling.

For a second year in a row, in research conducted by Kantar Agency, Yettel has been recognised as the ecologically most responsible company. Projects which contributed to this type of Yettel’s perception are:

  • Green energy –Yettel network is “green” as of 2022 because it is using electrical power produced from renewable sources (Hydroelectric Power Plant “Đerdap 1“), and from 2024 also all Yettel facilities are supplied in this way- shops, HQ, storage, and regional centres.
  • Recycling of old devices - Up till now, together with customers, Yettel has recycled over 113 tons of hazardous electrical and electronic waste. Our goal is to reach 2,7 million recycled devices by the year 2027.
  • Eco Bonus – With the help of this digital service, plastic and paper waste is recycled on behalf of Yettel's customers. In this way, over 1,700 tons of this type of waste have been collected.
  • Paperless business and electronic bill – 90% of transactions in retail are carried out without paper, while electronic bill payment is used by over 1,2 million Yettel's customers. The goal is to have this number reach 1.6 million by the year 2027.
